Chapter One  THE WRITING PROCESS

 

Writing Process consists of three stages:

 

Invention: A. Setting Limits

a.       identify length: in pages or in words

b.   identify purpose:  inform, entertain, persuade

c.       audience:  general, specific

d.      occasion:  artificial or real world

e.       knowledge on subject

1.      journal

2.      brainstorm

3.      graphic organizers

a.       spider mapping

b.       clustering

 

                  B. Create a Thesis  ( main point of essay)

                                 

 

 

 

 

Arrangement:  A. Select Mode (and organizational pattern)

Examples of Modes and their organizational patterns:

      a.   narrative ~ chronological order

b.      description ~ spatial order

c.       contrast-comparison ~ point by point or subject by subject

d.      exemplification ~ topical or emphatic

*Check the texts for additional modes and their organizational patterns

 

                         B.  Create an outline:  formal or informal

                                With a formal outline always be consistent w/ numbering

                                  and lettering the various sections.

 

 

Drafting and Revising: A. Draft

                                           1st draft should always concern itself w/ content

                                            2nd draft should address content and sentence structure

                                            3rd draft should address more sentence structure and other

                                            areas of form such as grammar, spelling, and punctuation
