  Dictionary.com provides a intuitive and robust searchable online dictionary.

• Thesaurus.com (Lexico Publishing Group)
  This is a companion site to Dictionary.com.

• Online Writing Lab: Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (Purdue University)
  This site offers "handouts and exercises on grammar, spelling, and punctuation."

• Citation Styles (Bedford/St. Marten)
  Textbook publisher Bedford/St. Marten offers examples of both APA and MLA citation of online material.

• HowStuffWorks.com (HSW Media Network)
  This site offers insight into how everyday items function.

• How to Cite Online Nursing Resources Using APA Style (University of Nevada, Reno)
  The University of Nevada Library elaborates on the online citation materials provided by the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (Fourth Edition).

Tutorials

There is a wealth of information available on the WWW to help users of any skill level become more proficient in almost any application imaginable. Below are a list of links to sites that provide excellent explanations and exercises to help strengthen skills in Microsoft Word, and several other common programs.

• Using Tracking and Reviewing Features in Microsoft Word 2002/XP Tutorial (UMass Lowell)
  UMass Lowell provides this excellent tutorial on using the "track changes" options in Word.
• Technology Skills Orientation (Florida Gulf Coast University)
  Although the most current available Microsoft Office Suite is XP these Office 2000 tutorials are still valuable learning aids.

• Tutorial on Microsoft Word XP (from Dynamic Zone FX)
  This is a Word XP-specific tutorial provided by Dynamic Zone FX.
• Online Tutorials (Mid America Nazarene University)
  This site features an excellent collection of links to tutorials including Microsoft Office, FrontPage, PowerPoint, Publisher, Netscape Composer, and PhotoEditor.

Web Search Resources

Understanding how and why search engines behave the way they do can prove invaluable when researching a topic online. The same can be said for knowing what to do to broaden or narrow search results. The following sites contain information geared to help you become a more conscientious researcher.

• Finding Information on the Internet: A Tutorial (UC Berkeley)
  This site, a companion Web site for UC Berkeley's Research Quality Web Searching class, provides everything from Netscape Web browser guides to search strategies, as well as a breakdown of the basic types of Web search tools.
• The Spider's Apprentice (Tips on using search engines Excite, Google, and Yahoo)
  "The Spider's Apprentice, Spidap, is not another search engine. It doesn't crawl the Web looking for new URLs. It can't find stuff for you...but it can help you find it yourself."
• BARE BONES 101 (USC Beaufort Library)
  Ellen Chamberlain of the USC Beaufort Library maintains this site which gives such basic information as the difference between Search Engines and Subject Directories and information on evaluating Web pages.
• SeachEngineWatch.com (The Source for Search Engine Marketing and Optimization)
  While this site's primary purpose is to serve Webmasters and those interested in Web-based marketing, it does provide an impressive array of tips and information on how search engines work.
