Due to the wide range of skills needed, there are many ways to prepare for jobs in the IT field such as computer support specialist, systems administrator, or computer programmer.  Many employers prefer to hire people with college education, some requiring a computer-related associate degree or a certificate and others a bachelor’s degree.  Required skills vary from job to job, but the demand for various skills generally is driven by changes in technology.

 Job Opportunities

  • Network Systems Administrator - implement, administer, monitor and troubleshoot network operating software such as Windows 2000.

  • PC Support Specialist - implement and maintain personal computer system hardware, install and support PC operating systems and applications.

  • Computer Support Specialist - implement, maintain and troubleshoot both computer system software and hardware. Computer platform may be mainframe, mini or micro.

  • Network Operations Analyst - implement, monitor, maintain and troubleshoot Network WAN and LAN connectivity devices and software.

  • IT Help Desk Support - support computer end users by troubleshooting problems, developing solutions and implementing corrective actions

In the past ten years, computers have become an integral part of everyday life, used at home, work and school. The explosion of computer use has created a high demand for people who assist users, work in day-to-day administration, program, maintain, and support computer systems and networks.  Job prospects should be best for those with college degrees who are up to date with the latest skills and technologies, particularly those with relevant work experience.
