After 13 years in manufacturing, working all manner of shifts and
production work, I was ready for a change. I had always been
interested in computers ever since my first one, an Apple 2c. So I
decided to follow my interests, first into a course of study and
then, hopefully, a successful career change.
That’s where Greenville Tech came in. I heard that they were
starting a computer-networking program. This, I thought, would allow
me to learn about and work on a vast array of computer equipment.
Not only that, it would allow me the freedom and flexibility in my
future work environment to interact with all sorts of users, from
the production floor to the CEO. The last thing I wanted was to be
tied down to a desk all day.
The Greenville Tech Networking curriculum was everything I had hoped
it would be, interesting classes, lively discussions and plenty of
“hands on”. The instructors all had industry experience and brought
with them “real life” scenarios to flesh out the texts.
While I was still in school I found a part-time help-desk job
(through GT) working for a small software application company just
off campus. After almost year of working there (while still working
full-time at my manufacturing job and going to GT part-time!) I quit
my manufacturing job and went full-time help-desk. A few months
after that, shortly before graduation, I heard about a support
specialist job opening in Simpsonville (again through GT). I applied
for that job and have been there for 4 years now.
I won’t say that I owe everything to Greenville Tech because work
and school both demanded a lot of hard work and perseverance on my
part. But I can honestly say that enrolling in the
computer-networking program at Greenville Tech is one of the best
decisions I have ever made.
