     following minimum objectives:

·        To draft, write, and revise a minimum of four essays (500 word minimum) on literary topics (including literary analysis) to be assigned by the instructor, adhering to the guidelines of the English Department’s Theme Standard Sheet.

Three essays must cover the genre—one on fiction, one on drama, and one on  poetry. The fourth essay can be a genre paper, or it can be substituted for by one of the following: (1) three micro themes,  (2) a journal, (3) an oral presentation, or (4) the final exam.

·        To research, outline, draft, and write out of class a research paper of 1000 to 2000 words, adhering to the guidelines of the department's Theme Standard Sheet.

·        To demonstrate on two written tests and a final exam the ability to analyze and discuss the fiction, poetry, and drama assigned, using the methods and terminology covered in the text and lecture.

·        To produce all out-of-class writing on a computer.

·        To write a final exam demonstrating mastery of composition and content within an official, timed exam period without assistance from the instructor. If the instructor substitutes the final exam for essay four, the final exam will then include a fully developed essay.

NOTE:  These objectives outline minimum requirements.  The instructor may
require additional assignments.  The number of in-class writing assignments (if any)
will be determined by the instructor.
