of ENG 101 with a grade of C or better.
Course Description: This
course is a critical examination of significant films. Films
representing a variety of genres (western, film
noir, screwball comedy, etc.) and
countries will be viewed and analyzed.
Purpose of Course: To
provide students with skills to recognize film terminology
and techniques and to use those skills in
analyzing the characteristics and development
of film genres.
Required Texts: Spicer, Andrew.
Film Noir. Harlow: Longman, 2002.
Additional readings from handouts, reserve materials and/or websites
will be
announced in class.
Additional Materials: Any additional materials required by an
instructor will be
announced in class.
Objectives of Course:
Students who successfully complete ENG 228 will
have demonstrated with 70% accuracy or
better the skills required to accomplish
the following minimum objectives:
1.
pass one test and a comprehensive final examination in which they
complete some or all of the following:
o
mise-en-scene,
o
montage,
o
shots,
o
angles,
o
lighting,
o
dominants;
-
list,
define and apply in film analyses the characteristics of
different
film genre;

explain
the historic and social contexts of different film genre;

explain
the major stages in the evolution of film genre;
-
list
and discuss the contributions of major filmmakers to various genre;
2.
complete three writing assignments or projects analyzing
different aspects of genre.
NOTE:
These objectives outline minimum requirements.
The instructor may require
additional assignments.
The number of in-class writing assignments (if any) will
be
determined by the instructor.
