     Prerequisite:  A Grade of C or better in Eng 102.

 

     Course Description: Presents techniques of creative writing in a variety of genres. As 
     a study and application of the principles of fiction and poetry, it involves a study of basic 
     techniques, themes, and established artists of each genre emphasizing student writing, 
     both assigned and "free," and several "schools" of poetry and fiction.

 

      Purpose of Course: To enable the student to effectively write creative works-short 
     stories, children's literature, poetry-through guided practice and study of literary 
     models and criticism.

 

     Required Texts: 
     DeShazer, Mary K., ed. The Longman Anthology of Women's Literature. Boston:
           Addison-Wesley, 2001.

         

     Additional Materials: Any additional materials required by an instructor will be 
     announced in class.

 

     Objectives of Course: Students who successfully complete the above course will
     have demonstrated with 70% accuracy or better the skills required to accomplish 
     the following minimum objectives:
 

  1. to produce poems and short stories;

  2. to sharpen critical abilities by gaining practice in analyzing texts composed by professional writers as well as classmates;

  3. to learn how to offer constructive criticism to other student writers in a workshop setting.
