Policies for Developmental Math Department Courses Fall 2006

(MAT 031, 032, and 101)

Greenville Technical College

The following pages outline the general policies for all math courses this term.  Please read the material carefully and any other handouts your instructor has for you.  Signing the receipt of the course information sheet means that you have read and understand these policies and agree to abide by them.

ATTENDANCE:  Studies done on college students show a high correlation between regular class attendance and success in courses.  You are responsible for all material assigned or discussed in class regardless of whether or not you are present.  According to the Greenville Technical College Student Handbook, “class attendance is necessary to receive maximum benefits from the educational program and to have successful academic performance.  It is the student’s responsibility to attend class and to be punctual.”  A student in MAT 031, 032, or 101 will be administratively withdrawn if: 1) more than 3 hours of class in a given course are missed and 2) the student has a course grade average less than 75.  The student will not be notified that he/she is being administratively withdrawn.

CLASSROOM CONDUCT: See the Student Code Section of the Student Handbook, in the current Greenville Tech catalog for expected standards of conduct.

Devices such as beepers/pagers and personal cellular phones are permitted on campus but must not be activated in classrooms. If you must use your cell phone in the building please move to the stairwell or outside to avoid disruption of classes.  You should only ask questions about problems that you have previously tried, since class time is very limited.  You should not be late for class, but if you are late, you should enter the classroom quietly.

Academic Misconduct: Use of unauthorized assistance during a test or changing a graded test to gain points will result in a grade of zero on that test with no possibility of making it up.  See section IIIC of the Student Code.

CAMPUS CRUISER: You may be required to access course information including handouts, announcements and email on Campus Cruiser.  There is a link to Campus Cruiser on the Greenville Technical College internet homepage (www.greenvilletech.com).  Computer lab managers can help you with learning how to access Campus Cruiser.

HOMEWORK / QUIZZES ONLINE may be required by some instructors.  To meet this requirement you may need to have access to a computer with internet capability. There are computer labs on each campus that are available to students for this purpose.

TESTS AND QUIZZES:  Any exceptions to the policies below may be found on the course syllabus provided by your instructor. All tests are to be taken without the use of notes or texts; however, scientific calculators may be used on some tests. A missed test cannot be made up.  Only one missed test will be replaced by the final exam grade.  If all chapter tests are taken, then the final exam grade can replace the lowest test grade. Grades will not be given over the phone, posted, faxed, or e-mailed.  Some instructors may post grades to the Campus Cruiser grade book for your class.

All major tests or projects are announced in advance, although unannounced short quizzes may be given; such quizzes may not be made up. The tests will cover the material in the chapters designated on the outline contained in this syllabus; however, some questions on each test may be on material covered in previous chapters, especially those questions that have been missed on earlier tests.

Tests will consist mainly of problems to be worked but may contain a limited number of discussion or objective (T-F, multiple choice, matching, fill-in-blank) questions. All work must be shown unless other instructions are given.

You should retain all tests (if they are returned) and keep a record of all of your test grades.

GRADING:

Standards for each letter grade are given below:

A:  90% - 100%  Outstanding performance, able to solve non-routine problems

B:  80% - 89%   Good performance, able to solve routine problems very well

C:  70% - 79%   Adequate performance, able to solve most routine problems

D:  60% - 69%  Not acceptable as a prerequisite and not

       transferable

F:   0% - 59%  Failing

Final examinations are given during the week following the last day of class.  Exact dates of the final exam days may be found in the "Schedule of Classes" published each semester.  Your instructor will announce exact times well in advance. The final exam will be comprehensive (cover all material in the course) and may not be exempted.

GRADE FOR THE COURSE: The final grade for your course will be calculated as outlined in your course syllabus.   If this course is required as a prerequisite to another course, a C or higher must be earned to proceed to the next course.

Audit (AU) Grade:

·          Student must register as an auditor before the end of drop-add.  (See student handbook for details.)

·          Student earns no credit hours and may not subsequently earn credit by examination.

·          Testing and class participation are optional with instructor.

·          An audit may not be looked upon favorably by some colleges.

Incomplete (I) Grade:  To be eligible for a grade of “I” a student

·          must have passing average

·          must have missed no more than one test or assignment

·          must have valid excuse

·          must request that instructor give "I" grade

·          must make up missed work within a time agreed upon by the instructor and in no case later than one week prior to the beginning of final exams of the next semester.

SUPPLEMENTAL HELP

Student Support Services (Bldg 105 - Rm 206), 250-8959, will arrange free tutoring appointments for qualified Greenville Tech. students.  Check on hours and availability of tutors.

The Math Center located in The Learning Center at Barton Campus (Bldg 104 – Rm 131), Greer Campus (Bldg 301 - Rm 203) and Brashier Campus (Bldg 201 – Rm 133) is available to help GTC students solve problems in math courses.  No appointment is needed for the Math Center and a schedule of available times is posted on the door.  Various supplemental texts, study guides, answer books, videos and computer tutorials are located here.

Math Center Policy Statement:

·          The Math Center staff will assist any student who is currently enrolled in a GTC mathematics course.

·          The Math Center staff will only assist students with math problems presented in their original format.  In other words, you must present the problem to the staff from the original text or handout.

·          The Math Center staff will limit their help to 10 minutes, if necessary.

·          The Math Center staff has the right to refuse help if the staff member believes that academic integrity is being jeopardized.

ACCOMMODATION OF SPECIAL NEEDS BASED ON DISABILITY:  Any student who requests accommodation of special needs because of disability must present documentation to verify his/her disability.  Documentation must be obtained from the Student Disability Services Office (Bldg.105 - Rm. 124, 250-8202).  Following documentation, accommodation will be determined by the instructor and student on a confidential basis and in a manner that is consistent with the objectives, outcomes, and academic quality of the course.

INCLEMENT WEATHERDuring periods of inclement weather, Greenville Technical College will follow the schedule announced by the Greenville County School District (public schools) with regard to DAY classes that meet Mondays - Fridays. A delay in opening would mean to attend the next class starting after the announced opening time. Announcements for evening classes will be submitted by 3 p.m.  Cancellations are announced by local radio and television stations, and on the school website, www.greenvilletec.com. A recorded message will be available at the college switchboard 864-250-8000.

EXPECTATIONS:  You can't learn mathematics without working problems; what seems perfectly clear in class will fade from memory very rapidly without homework to reinforce it.  You should expect to spend two hours outside of class working on this course for each hour you spend in class.

To maintain the best possible environment in this class, contact your instructor immediately if problems related to teaching and learning occur. Your comments (including concerns about teaching and grading procedures) will be addressed in a serious, professional manner.  Constructive criticism is welcomed since your views help your instructor to judge whether or not your educational needs are being met.

If, for any reason, you do not want to share your concerns with your instructor or you are dissatisfied with the response to your comments, please contact the mathematics department head:
