Constructing a Probability Histogram

Example:  Construct a probability histogram of the probability distribution given in the table below.

x

P(X = x)

0

0.008

1

0.096

2

0.384

3

0.512

Press STAT and select 1: Edit. Clear L1 and L2.Using table above, enter the X-values into L1 and the P(X=x) values into L2.

To graph the probability distribution, press 2nd [STATPLOT] and press ENTER. Turn ON Plot1, select Histogram for Type, type in 2nd [L1] for Xlist and 2nd [L2] for Freq. Press WINDOW and set Xmin = 0, Xmax =4, Xscl = 1, Ymin = 0 and Ymax =.55. Choosing ‘Xmax = 4’ leaves some space at the right of the graph in order to complete the histogram. The Ymax value was selected by looking through the values in L2 and then rounding the largest value UP to a convenient number. Press GRAPH to view the histogram.
